Presbyterian University of East Africa
The Presbyterian University of East Africa (PUEA) is an institution of higher education in Kenya registered with the Ministry of Higher Education and the Commission for Higher Education (CHE).
Though set at The Kikuyu Main Campus and at the St. Andrew’s Church Teaching Site, PUEA has remote sites across thirteen campuses, including five hospitals. It has six hundred and fifty students (650); and a further twenty seven thousand (27,000) in the Theology Education by Extension (TEE) program throughout the country.
PUEA offers Certificate, Diploma, and Degree programmes in Computer Science; Theology; Business Administration; Education; Health Sciences; Hotel and Tourism; and Communication. It also offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) postgraduate degree.
The Vice Chancellor
Professor Kihumbu Thairu is a Founder Member of PUEA, which he joined in July 2008. He is a Professor of Medicine, a well-published author, and holds: M.B. Ch.B. (East Africa); Ph.D (London); and FRCP(Glasgow). He was Chief Medical Advisor and the Director of Medical Programme at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London and served in numerous WHO Experts Committees. Professor Thairu is the Founder Chairman of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI); he was instrumental in the development of the College of Health Sciences at University of Nairobi (as Dean, Faculty of Medicine) and in the creation of the School of Pharmacy and Dentistry. He has also served at Moi University. He is the outgoing Chairman of the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) and a member of many Professional, Academic and Social Associations.
School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Dr. Timothy Henry Gatara is a Founder Member of PUEA, which he joined in July 2007. He is the Deputy Vice Chancellor. He is a renowned Social Scientist and holds: Ph.D. Sociology (Florida State); Masters in Development Sociology (Florida State), Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology, (Nairobi), Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Population Dynamics (Johns Hopkins); and is a Well-Published Author. Was: Director, Institute for the Study of African Realities (ISAR), Africa Christian University; Manager for Donor – the International Planned Parenthood Federation; Lecturer, University of Nairobi; and developed population policy guidelines for the World Bank and Kenya Government.
School of Health Sciences
Professor Paul Mungai Mbugua is a Founder Member of PUEA, which he joined in July 2009. He is the Director of Academic Affairs and Head of School. He holds: Ph.D. (Nairobi); and B. Pharmacy (Nairobi). He has supervised and examined several postgraduate theses; and is well published. He was: Fulbright Scholar (Texas); Visiting Scientist at Strathclyde and Uppsala; Senior Lecturer, University of Nairobi; the Pharmacist, KNH Nakuru; and Production Manager, Sterling.
School of Computer Science
Mr. Mungai Andrew Gichuho is a Founder Member of PUEA, joined in July 2009. He holds: B.Ed (Kenyatta); PGDCS (Nairobi); MSc. IS (Nairobi); and deferred PhD (Nairobi) in 2007. He also trained in Japan and the UK, and conducted PhD research in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany and has several publications. He is Director of ICT, Senior Lecturer and Head of School. He held Senior ICT Positions at University of Nairobi; joined Kenyatta University as the Director of ICT and has played critical roles in the creation and development of University ICT Functions at UoN, KU and currently at PUEA.
School of Theology
Professor Gerishon Kirika is a Founder Member of PUEA, Ph.D (Aberdeen); Th.M. (Princeton); C.P.E. (Texas); M.Div. (Princeton) BA. (Hayward State) AA. (Contra Costa). Professor Kirika has been a DVC at PUEA, a Senior Lecturer at Kenyatta University and a Tutorial Fellow at Hayward. He was also an Examiner with Kenya National Examination Council, a Bible translator, a PCEA Moderator, and an Adjunct Professor for Field Education, of Princeton Theological Seminary, U.S.A.
School of Education and External Studies
Dr. Geoffrey O. Anyembe joined in PUEA July 2010 as a Senior Lecturer and Head of School. He holds: PhD (Catholic); M.ED (Nairobi); B.Ed (Kenyatta); and has several publications. He was: Director of Academic affairs, Kampala International University; Lecturer, Catholic University; the Secretary General, Kenya Science Teachers Association; Dean of Studies, Makini School; Dean of Studies Agah High School; Head of Chemistry Department, Peponi School; and Head of Science Department, Lenana School.
School of Journalism and Communication
Dr. Githiora, Wanyagi B., Part-time Senior Lecturer and Acting Head of School. He holds: Diploma in Journalism (KIMC); MA and PhD Journalism (Moscow); Dean, HOD, and Senior Lecturer, Moi University; He has been: a Lecturer at KIMC; a Journalist with Kenya News agency and Executive Magazine; and a Special Correspondent with The EastAfrican. Dr. Githiora has supervised and examined several postgraduate theses; and is a well-published author.
School of Business Administration
Mr. Michael N. Nyamute is a Ph.D finalist at – and has an MBA (Finance), and a BA (Economics) from – University of Nairobi. He is a Senior Lecturer and Head of School. He was: Group Economic and Business Analyst at The Standard Media Group; Associate Management and Research Consultant at Flaxem Enterprises Ltd; and an Associate Consultant at UNESCO (Association for the Development of Education in Africa, ADEA); and Head of Research and Corporate Affairs – Capital Markets Authority
School of Hotel and Tourism
Mr. Frank Riungu is a Lecturer and Head of School having joined in July 2008. He holds: MA (USIU); B.Sc (Florida International); and Diploma in Hotel Management (Utalii). Frank has served as a Lecturer at the Hotel School Luzanne in Switzerland; the Head of Hotel and Tourism Department, Egerton University; Co-ordinator Hotel and Tourism Department at USIU Africa; and Senior Lecturer, Utalii College;. He was also: Manager, Lake Nakuru Lodges; Education Advisor, American Embassy; Advisor, UNESCO Education and Peace Programme in Somali; Manager, Moi Sports Complex, Kasarani; Food and Beverage Manager Nairobi Serena Hotel; and Trainee Hotel Manager at London Hilton.
