How to Clear Goods at the Port of Mombasa

There are various types of goods that pass through the Port of Mombasa i.e. local imports, local exports, transit imports, transit exports and transshipment.  Each type of cargo is covered by different types of shipping documents and undergoes different clearance processes.

Basically you need to appoint a clearing agent to clear goods on your behalf. The process begins when you hand over your documents to a registered clearing agent who will lodge them with the Kenya Revenue Authority and Kenya Ports Authority. This should be done at least 7 days before the arrival of the ship at the port. This enables the agent enough time to ready to clear goods and return the container within the free period to the shipping lines nominated depot.
