How to become a swimming instructor in Kenya

1. You first need to know how to swim.

2. Register with the Kenya Lifesaving Federation or the YMCA and take up Lifesaving classes and swimming instructor classes.

3. There are three levels of the Swimming instructor course:

a. Level one: learn to swim – this certification allows you to teach people basic swimming skills.

b. Level two: Become a coach – this certification allows you to teach advanced swimming at competitive levels.

c. Level Three: Become an official – this certification allows you to officiate local and international swimming competitions.

4. Take the life-saving courses provided by Kenya Lifesaving Federation or the YMCA.

5. On completion of both courses, you receive an internationally recognised certificate as a lifeguard and swim instructor.

6. Seek your personal clientele.

7. You can also join FINA –The international Swimming Federation through the Kenya chapter as a member, if interested in international competitive swimming and coaching.

8. Renew your license annually with the Kenya Lifesaving Federation or the YMCA.
